MAJONG GROUP - IT'S NOT MAHJONG SOLITAIRE
Would you like to know what “Dragons Tail! a “Wriggling Snake” or “Dragonfly” are? These are some of the hands that can be played during a mornings session.
Mahjong as we know it today is a fairly modern game played since the 1800’s with many variations and additions. It became very popular in the 1920’s and settled into a format we recognise today. It has similarities with Rummy and the winner on the day is the person who has accumulated the most points.
Played with a set of 148 tiles (tactile, as they are the real deal, pun intended!) that chatter when shuffled hence the name mahjong which means “sparrow”. There are three suits and the winds and dragons plus some additional tiles.
Give your brain an enjoyable workout, mahjong encourages the use lots of cognitive skills :-
- Planning
- Strategy and tactics
- Decision making
- Numeracy
- Memory
- Observation
All this while thoroughly enjoying yourself.
Luck plays a part too so the beginner has every chance of scoring well.
So, if you have one or two Friday mornings free come and join us. We play every Friday morning at 10.00am till 12ish, but there is no obligation to come to each session.
Do come and join us and give it a go. You’ll find a warm welcome, a delicious cup of coffee, and friendly insults flying freely!”
If you are interested in joining send our group leader an email with your contact details and she will give you a call
